SSC Assistant Grade Examination

The SSC Assistant Grade Examinations is a competitive examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission. The Staff Selection Commission, known earlier as the Services Selection Commission, organizes examinations for recruitment of personnel into the Class III and Class IV categories of employees in the Central as well as State Government cadre. Through the Assistants’ Grade Examination, the Staff Selection Commission employs personnel for the following posts:

  • Grade IV Assistant in the General Cadre of the Indian Foreign Services
  • Grade II Cypher Assistant of the Cypher Cadre of the Indian Foreign Service Branch
  • Assistants’ Grade of the Railway Board Secretariat Service
  • Assistants’ Grade of the Railway Board Secretariat Service
  • Assistants Grade of the Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service
  • Assistants in other Departments not included above

Assistant’s Grade Examination Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates should be between 20 and 25 years of age and candidates should have attained the age of 25 years as on the 1st of August of the previous year
  • For scheduled castes/ scheduled tribes / other backward classes, the maximum age limit of 25 years can be extended. The maximum age limit can also be extended for persons notified by the Government of India.

Application Procedure for SSC Assistant Grade Examination:

The Staff Selection Commission Assistants Grade Examination is held on a yearly basis in 2 phases. In January, the objective type preliminary examination is conducted and for those candidates who qualify the main examination is conducted in July. The notification for the examination is carried in the Employment News and other leading dailies in the September of the previous year. Candidates are required to apply as per the given proforma published in the Employment News. The last date of submission of forms is usually in the first week of November.

Selection Procedure for SSC Assistant Grade Examinations

The selection procedure for the SSC Assistant Grade Examinations is divided into two stages:
1) A Preliminary Written Examination for selection of candidates for the Main Examination. The Preliminary Examination comprises four sections: Reasoning Ability, General Awareness, Arithmetic and Language Paper English or Hindi. The test is of three hours duration and carries maximum marks of 300. Questions in this section will be Objective Type, Multiple Choice and bilingual, i.e., in Hindi and English. Only the language paper will be in the language as specified by the candidate.
2) The Main Written Examination is only for candidates who have been short listed through the Preliminary Written Examination. This exam consists of two papers. Paper 1 is on Language Comprehension, which includes General English and Communication/Writing Skill carrying maximum marks of 200. Paper 2 is on Arithmetic carrying maximum marks of 100. The total duration of the test is 5 hours
